      Our Activity Ministry

Highland’s Activity Ministry is a supportive ministry of many groups inside and outside of our church. It is a continuing service to the members and prospects of Highland Baptist Church.

The goal of the Highland Baptist Activity Ministry is to provide all ages and backgrounds unlimited possibilities for personal spiritual growth. This goal is obtained through in-reach, outreach, and support related activities.

One of the ministry's top responsibilities is serving the needs of Highland's membership. We try to do this by offering assorted activities to meet the diverse interest of this church's population.

Recreation is a strong tool for evangelism. It is important that we stress outreach as an equal ground for having activities. Our goal is to encourage Highlander's to utilize the outreach potential of each activity as it pertains to their personal situation. All activities are planned so outreach is always a possibility.

Highland is composed of many unique ministries that must work together, through similar goals, to reach its ultimate purpose. Our goal is to bridge that gap between the activity ministry and the many other ministries of Highland.

        What is Upward Basketball?

Upward Basketball is a unique basketball ministry to all of Lubbock. Quite simply, it is a basketball evangelism league for children, grades 1-6.

      How does Upward Basketball minister?

      1) To the players - Each coach is responsible for preparing a devotion for each practice.

      2) To the coaches - In Upward Basketball the coaches become the ministers. They have the opportunity to be trained to encourage the players, make them feel special, teach the game of basketball, and most of all, share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

      3) To the player's parents - Each parent receives an Upward Handbook. This book contains the practice devotions that are shared by the coaches. At Halftime of each game, a volunteer gives a five-minute devotional and leads a prayer in front of the parents, family and friends waiting in the stands.

      4) To Highland Baptist Church - Upward Basketball's outreach and evangelism potential is enormous. Its potential can only be reached if Highland members are involved. Upward is different from any other league in our community, whether secular or church based.

In Upward Basketball, Christ's message is #1.

      What Makes Upward Basketball Unique?

      1) Prayer - The most important aspect of Upward Basketball is the dedication to prayer. Prayer Partners pray daily throughout the 100+ days of Upward Basketball. Games include a prayer before the game (by the referee), prayer at Halftime (by the devotional leader), and a prayer at the end of the game (by the coach). Practices also include a prayer by the coach.

      2) Devotionals - Both the coach-led and the volunteer-led devotions are a special and unique part of Upward Basketball.

      3) Special rules that promote:

      1. The principle of authority
      2. Respect for authority
      3. Protection of players
      4. An equal opportunity for player improvement

      How can I be involved?

      1. Prayer Partner
      2. Devotional Leader
      3. Coach or Assistant Coach
